Japan: Flood and landslide warnings remain in effect in Kyushu August 29 /update 3

Heavy rain, flooding, and landslide warnings remain in effect for Saga, Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Oita, Yamaguchi, Hiroshima, and Shimane prefectures as of 09:20 (local time) on Thursday, August 29. Torrential rains continued in southwestern Japan on Thursday, with Saga prefecture being one of the most affected areas after receiving over 40 cm (16 in) of rain in 48 hours. At least three fatalities have been confirmed in Saga and Fukuoka prefectures. Train service disruptions are ongoing as of Thursday morning and roads have been washed away in some areas. Evacuation orders remain in for around 670,000 residents as heavy rain is forecast to continue through Thursday.

Recovery efforts are ongoing in Kyushu and emergency rescue teams have been deployed to assist in evacuations. Further flooding, mudslides, and landslides are anticipated in the region in the coming hours. Associated transportation and business disruptions, including possible rail and flight delays or cancelations, are also likely. Further evacuation orders may be issued through Thursday.

It is important to note that walking or driving through floodwaters can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
