Japan: Typhoon Faxai to impact Tokyo and its surroundings September 8-9

Event

The Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) forecast Typhoon Faxai to make landfall in the Kanto region, including the Tokyo metropolitan area, at approximately 20:00 (local time) on Sunday, September 8, through to at least noon on Monday, September 9. As of 12:45 (local time) on Sunday, September 8, Typhoon Faxai is located at 32.1°N 139.3°E (map here) and is moving northwest at 30 kph (15 mph). The storm is expected to make landfall near Shizuoka prefecture, bringing heavy rain, maximum winds speeds of 144 kph (89 mph), and storm surge. The JMA has warned of associated landslides and flooding.

The operator of Shinkansen bullet trains has said that some services between Tokyo and Osaka will be suspended after 17:00 on Sunday, and has advised travelers to expect delays and schedule changes. Further transportation disruptions (including to flights and ferry services), and power outages are expected in the affected areas in the coming days.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, confirm flight reservations, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate power outages and transportation and business disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
