Japan: Three fatalities following passage of Typhoon Faxai near Tokyo September 10 /update 4

Event

At least three people have died, and a further 50 injured, following the passage of Typhoon Faxai near Tokyo on Monday, September 9. More than 14,000 people were stranded at Narita International Airport (NRT) early in the morning (local time) of Tuesday, September 10, as railway services connecting NRT to downtown Tokyo had been suspended. As of 11:50 on Tuesday, travelers stranded at NRT are gradually leaving the airport as railway and bus services resume. Keisei Electric Railway Co. has resumed services, and the East Japan Railway Co. that operates trains to and from NRT is expected to resume services later in the day.

As of 09:45 on Tuesday, Typhoon Faxai is located at 39.4°N 148.5°E (map here) and is moving east-northeast at 35 kph (22 mph) away from Japan. Residual transportation disruptions, including delays and cancelations, and power outages are expected in the affected areas in the coming hours and days.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, confirm flight reservations, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate power outages and transportation and business disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
