Japan: Two fatalities reported during power outages in Chiba September 11 /update 5

An official from Chiba prefecture said that at least two people have died from heatstroke as of Wednesday, September 11. The Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued a high temperature advisory in the Kanto region for Tokyo and surrounding areas warning individuals against possible severe conditions including heatstroke. The JMA also forecast strong winds, sudden heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lighting in the aforementioned areas on Wednesday.

As of 14:00 (local time) on Wednesday, approximately 437,100 households in Chiba prefecture were still being affected by power outages following the passage of Typhoon Faxai. Tokyo Electric Power company (TEPCO) has announced that power is unlikely to return in Chiba prefecture by the end of the day, but power has been restored to all regions in Shizuoka and Ibaraki prefectures. Water supply is gradually recovering after 84,000 households were without water on Tuesday, September 10, according to local media outlets. Officials and the military have dispatched water tanker trucks to the affected areas.

Transportation disruptions and continued power outages are expected in the affected areas in the coming hours and days.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, confirm flight reservations, adhere to instructions issued by local authorities, anticipate power outages and transportation and business disruptions, and remember that running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) is enough to knock over an adult - and never drive through flooded streets; floodwater may also contain wastewater and chemical products.
