Opposition groups plan to protest in Tbilisi on September 20 to demand the resignation of the new prime minister; heightened security measures and traffic disruptions expected

Political opposition groups are calling for supporters to rally in the capital Tbilisi on Friday, September 20, to demand the resignation of recently approved Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia. The demonstration is expected to be held outside of the parliament building. Opposition leaders are also denouncing perceived Russian influence in domestic affairs. A counter-protest by the Alliance of Patriots party may also take place.
Significant transportation and business disruptions are to be expected at and near any protest. A heightened security presence is anticipated, the use of force by police officers remains possible. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.
Context
Georiga's parliament approved Gakharia as prime minister on September 8 after Mamuka Bakhtadze resigned earlier in the month. Opposition leaders had previously called for Gakharia to resign as interior minister after police violently dispersed protesters outside of the parliament building on June 20. At least 240 people, including 80 police officers, were wounded during the clashes.
