Afghanistan: Three killed in bomb blast in Kandahar September 24

Bomb attack targeting President’s office in Kandahar kills three September 24; similar attacks possible over the near term

Warning

Event

An explosion at President Ashraf Ghani's office in Kandahar has reportedly left three people dead and at least seven injured on the night (local time) of Tuesday, September 24. The bomb was reportedly placed at the entrance of the office. No group has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

Similar attacks are possible in Afghanistan over the near term amid heightened tensions ahead of the presidential elections scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 28.

Context

Taliban militants launch attacks on government personnel, security forces, and civilians in Afghanistan on a near-daily basis. Such assaults are, in part, intended to undermine the perceived capacity of Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) - and the Afghan government more broadly - to adequately provide security in the wake of the withdrawal of most US-led NATO forces from the country. This attack was likely part of the election disruption strategy, as presidential elections are set to take place on September 28.

Advice

Individuals in Kandahar are advised to monitor the situation, avoid the affected area, liaise with their security partner, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Afghanistan remains complex. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
