Officials confirm at least 20 fatalities following earthquake in Maluku province September 26; further aftershocks possible

At least 20 people have been killed and 100 others injured in Maluku province after a 6.5-magnitude earthquake hit near the city of Ambon on Thursday, September 26. The quake struck at approximately 8:46 (local time) at a depth of 29 km (18 mi). Officials stated that dozens of homes, buildings, and public facilities were damaged in the quake, forcing over 2,000 people into shelters. Widespread power outages were also reported in several areas after the quake. 

Several aftershocks have been recorded in the area, including one of magnitude 5.6. Further aftershocks are possible in the region over the coming hours and days.

Individuals in the affected area are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for potential aftershocks.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from the windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
