Afghanistan: Suicide bombing attack in Jalalabad (Nangarhar province) October 7

Event

At least 10 people were killed and 27 other wounded in a suicide bombing attack in Jalalabad (Nangarhar province) on Monday, October 7. The blast struck a minibus of recruits for the Afghan security forces. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack; Islamic State (IS) militants, however, have carried out a series of attacks in the province in recent years and may be responsible for Monday's assault.

Similar militant attacks are possible in Nangarhar province over the near term.

Context

Taliban and Islamic State (IS) militants launch attacks on government personnel, security forces, and civilians in Afghanistan on a near-daily basis. Such assaults are, in part, intended to undermine the perceived capacity of Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) - and the Afghan government more broadly - to adequately provide security in the wake of the withdrawal of most US-led NATO forces from the country.
