Local officials confirmed at least four fatalities on Mindanao as of the morning (local time) of Thursday, October 17, after a 6.3-magnitdue earthquake hit the area on the previous day. Police said one person was killed in the town of Tulunan (North Cotabato province) after a wall collapsed due to the tremors. In Magsaysay (Davao del Sur province), three people were killed by falling debris and in a landslide. Over 60 people also suffered injuries in Tulunan, Magsaysay, and Digos (Davao del Sur). Damages to homes and buildings were reported throughout the region. Rescue and recovery operations are ongoing on Thursday, and casualty figures may be updated as more information is received.

According to the US Geological Survey, at least two aftershocks have been recorded following the initial earthquake on Wednesday, October 16. Further aftershocks are possible in the coming hours and days.

Context

The quake struck at around 19:37 on Wednesday approximately 22 km (14 mi) southeast of Tulunan at a depth of 14 km (9 mi).

Individuals in the affected area are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for potential aftershocks.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from the windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
