7.1-magnitude earthquake strikes off coast of Ternate island on November 14; tsunami threat issued

The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 7.1-magnitude earthquake around 138 km (85 mi) northwest of the island of Ternate (North Maluku province) on Thursday, November 14. The quake struck at a depth of 45 km (27 mi). A tsunami threat warning has been immediately issued. Aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.

Individuals in the region are advised to monitor the situation, prepare for potential aftershocks, and move away from coastlines. 

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from the windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
