Syria: Israeli military confirms airstrikes in Damascus November 20 /update 1

Representatives of the Israeli military confirmed on Wednesday, November 20, that Israel Defense Forces (IDF) carried out airstrikes on targets in south and southwest Damascus on the night (local time) of Tuesday, November 20. According to the IDF, the airstrikes targeted weapons depots and military bases belonging to the Iranian Quds Force and the Syrian Armed Forces. Syrian defense systems reportedly intercepted some of the missiles. Officials did not immediately announce any damages or casualties.

Similar airstrikes and retaliatory strikes are possible in the near term.

Context

Over the past year and a half, the Israeli military has struck more than 200 targets in Syria, many of which have been arms depots and military facilities allegedly receiving arms and fighters from Iran and the Lebanese Hezbollah group.
