Tunisia: Clashes reported in Jelma (Sidi Bouzid province) December 2

Event

Police reportedly fired tear gas to disperse protesters in Jelma (Sidi Bouzid province) on Monday, December 2. Clashes erupted in Jelma for a third consecutive day amid protests against poverty and a lack of job opportunities. Demonstrations began on Saturday, November 30, one day after a local laborer set himself on fire in response to poor living conditions. No casualties were immediately reported as a result of Monday's unrest. 

Additional demonstrations are to be expected in Jelma over the coming days. A heightened security presence and associated disruptions to transportation and business are likely around large protests. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.
