Philippines: 6.8-magnitude earthquake hits near Davao City (Mindanao) December 15

A 6.8-magnitude earthquake strikes Matanao municipality (Davao region) on Mindanao Island on December 15; aftershocks possible

The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 6.8-magnitude earthquake in Matanao municipality (Davao region) on Mindanao Island at around 14:11 (local time) on Sunday, December 15. According to the USGS, the quake struck at approximately 6.7°N 125.2°E at a depth of 28 km (17 mi).

There were no immediate reports of injuries or significant infrastructure damage, and no tsunami warning was issued.

Aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for potential aftershocks. In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from the windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
