Philippines: Traslación procession to take place in Manila January 9

Manila will host the annual Traslación procession on Thursday, January 9. The procession is expected to begin at 05:30 (local time) at the Quirino Grandstand, before heading to Quiapo Church. Business disruptions are expected as the day is a non-working holiday. Quiapo Church also announced that it will hold Novena Masses from Tuesday, December 31, through Wednesday, January 8.

Tens of thousands of people usually participate in the procession and a number of casualties have been reported in previous years. A heightened security presence and transportation disruptions, including road closures, are expected in Metro Manila throughout the Black Nazarene celebrations and on January 9 in particular. 

Context

Traslación means "transfer" and is an annual procession in Manila that re-enacts the transferal of the Black Nazarene from its original shrine in Intramuros to the Minor Basilica (or Quiapo Church). The Black Nazarene is a life-sized image of Jesus Christ carrying the Cross and depicts his crucifixion. It was carved in the 16th century in Mexico before being transported to the Philippines in 1606, where it is widely renowned and considered by many to be miraculous. The image - or a replica - is brought out in procession three times a year: January 9 (on the anniversary of its translation); Good Friday (to commemorate the culmination of the Passion); and on December 31 (on the first day of its annual novena).
