According to local sources, a United States drone attack in Shindand (Herat province) reportedly killed around 40 civilians and 30 Taliban militants at around 18:15 (local time) on Wednesday, January 8. Government officials have not immediately commented on the attack nor have they confirmed the exact number of casualties. Details are still emerging.
The airstrike was reportedly conducted by the US Forces Afghanistan, at the request of Afghan Security Forces following a militant attack on an anti-Taliban militia in which 16 people, including one civilian, were killed.
