Angola: Deadly flooding kills at least 41 people as of January 9

Significant flooding is impacting 12 out of 18 provinces in Angola as of Thursday, January 9, resulting in widespread damage to infrastructure and homes. According to Interior Minister Eugénio Laborinho, at least 41 people have been killed since heavy rains began on Saturday, January 4. Over 2000 families have been affected and over 1000 homes were damaged or destroyed, including in Luanda province. The worst hit areas in the province include Talatona, Viana, and Cazenga municipalities. Officials said that drinking water and electricity has been cut off in some areas impacted by the flooding.

Recovery efforts are ongoing across the country. Further rain is expected across most parts of the country through at least Friday, January 10. Additional flooding is possible in the coming days and weeks. Associated transportation, business, and power disruptions are anticipated in the affected areas.

Individuals present in affected areas are advised to keep abreast of the situation, avoid areas directly hit by flooding, and adhere to any orders issued by the local authorities or their home governments. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded. Be aware that the risk of contracting water- and mosquito-borne diseases tends to rise after periods of heavy rainfall.
