Syrian army airstrikes kill at least 17 people across Idlib province on January 11; ceasefire to be implemented on January 12
Event
At least 17 people were killed and more than 40 others wounded across Idlib province on Saturday, January 11, as a result of Syrian army airstrikes. According to local officials, four cities in the province were targeted in Saturday's air raids. A ceasefire brokered by Turkey and Russia is set to be implemented in Idlib at 00:01 (local time) on Sunday, January 12. The ceasefire aims to prevent further migrant flows out of the province by halting air and land assaults by government forces.
Context
To date, the Syrian conflict involves many parties, including the Syrian government, the Russian government, the Iranian government, the Turkish government, a US-led coalition, and numerous armed groups on the ground (including the Islamic State) with competing goals.
