Over 25,000 residents displaced in Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo states as of January 28 as heavy rains continue

Warning

Event

As of Monday, January 27, an increased number of residents, now at over 25,000, have been displaced due to ongoing heavy rains that have hit Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo states. At least 53 people have died and another 19 are missing amid infrastructure damage and flooding. Rescue operations are ongoing throughout the states. The state of Minas Gerais has declared three days of mourning due to the significant loss of life, from January 27 through Wednesday, January 29.

Rain is expected to continue over the next several days in Belo Horizonte and other areas. Further flooding and more infrastructure damage are therefore possible. Disruptions to transportation and business are likely to continue in the coming days.

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions prior to setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. It is important to note that that walking or driving through floodwaters can be dangerous; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
