Cuba: 7.7-magnitude earthquake strikes offshore northwest of Jamaica January 28

Event

A 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck some 125 km (78 mi) north-northwest of Lucea (Jamaica) around 14:10 (local time) on Tuesday, January 28. While no tsunami warning was immediately issued by the US Tsunami Warning System, tsunami waves are possible on the shores of Cuba over the coming hours. Aftershocks are also possible in the region over the coming hours and days.

Individuals in areas of Cuba that may potentially be affected are advised to monitor the situation, immediately seek high ground, and prepare for potential aftershocks.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
