Security forces reportedly dispersed a protest in Bukavu (South Kivu province) on Tuesday, April 14, to denounce the arrest of Vital Kamerhe, Chief of Staff of President Felix Tshisekedi, on Wednesday, April 8. Protesters attempted to erect roadblocks and burn tires on roads before being dispersed by the police. At least ten protesters were subsequently arrested.
A heightened security presence is expected in the area over the coming hours and days. Further protests are likely over the near term. Clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.
Context
Kamerhe was arrested in Kinshasa on April 8 over corruption allegations. Since then, numerous protests have been held in his hometown Bukavu (South Kivu province). As of April 14, Kamerhe remains detained in the central Makala prison in Kinshasa.
