Japan: 6.4-magnitude earthquake strikes off eastern coast of Honshu April 20

Event

A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Honshu, approximately 33 km (21 mi) east-southeast of Ofunato (Iwate prefecture), on Monday morning (local time), April 20. No tsunami warning, watch, advisory, or threat was immediately issued by the US Tsunami Warning System. No damages or casualties were immediately reported.

Aftershocks are possible in the affected areas over the coming hours and days.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor the situation and prepare for potential aftershocks.

In the event of aftershocks, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), move away from windows, and not attempt to leave a building unless there is immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from tall buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
