Landslides cause multiple fatalities following heavy rain in Northern and Eastern provinces April 19; further adverse weather forecasted until April 26

Warning

Event

Landslides and flooding from heavy rain in the Gicumbi district (Northern Province) and Gatsibo district (Eastern Province) have resulted in at least nine fatalities on Sunday April 19. According to media sources on Monday, April 20, the worst affected areas are the Nyankenke and Kageyo sectors where property, infrastructure, crops, and livestock have been damaged or destroyed. Authorities urged residents in high-risk zones to relocate to safer areas.

Further heavy rain is forecast nationwide until Sunday, April 26. Further disruption due to damage from the flooding and continued rescue operations should be expected in the near term.

Advice

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate transportation disruptions, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions before setting out, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
