Indonesia: Heavy rains and associated flooding injure five in Central Aceh regency as of May 15 /update 1

As of Friday, May 15, heavy rainfall has caused flooding and landslides throughout Indonesia. On Thursday, May 14, the Indonesian government reported that five people were injured in Central Aceh regency. At least 57 homes were also damaged and 89 people displaced. Local media sources report further flooding and landslides in Cipanas district on Thursday, where 96 homes were damaged, and infrastructure destroyed. The rainy season, initially expected to end in April, is forecast to continue over the coming weeks, with extreme weather warnings in Aceh, Riau, Riau islands, Bengkulu, South Sumatra, West Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi, and parts of Kalimantan. In areas of Java, the rainy season is expected to stretch into June.

Further flooding and associated transportation disruptions are to be anticipated in the affected areas over the near term.

Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
