On Friday, May 22, the western-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced that they had killed two regional Islamic State (IS) leaders during an operation in Deir Ezzor province. The IS leaders were reportedly responsible for operations in northern Baghdad and logistics in Iraq and Syria.

A heightened security presence and possible retaliatory attacks are to be expected in Deir Ezzor province over the near term.

Context

To date, the Syrian conflict involves many parties, including the Syrian government, the Russian government, the Iranian government, the Turkish government, a US-led coalition, and numerous armed groups on the ground (including the Islamic State) with competing goals.
