Thousands gather in Perth and Sydney to demonstrate against police brutality in solidarity with Black Lives Matter movement on June 2; further protests and associated disruption possible over the near term

Warning

Event

On Tuesday, June 2, nearly 2000 people gathered in Perth and hundreds in Sydney to show solidarity with the recent demonstrations in America by the Black Lives Matter movement against police brutality. Protesters gathered at Forrest Chase in Perth's Central Business District (CBD). While there was a large police presence, the protest reportedly passed off peacefully. Demonstrators also marched from Hyde Park to Martin Place in Sydney's CBD on Tuesday. The event also passed off peacefully, although a later event was called off due to threats from counter-protesters. Further rallies are reportedly planned in Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and Brisbane over the coming days.

Disruption associated with further demonstrations is possible in major urban centers across Australia in the coming days.

Context

George Floyd died while being arrested by Minneapolis police officers on May 25. The four arresting police officers were subsequently fired, and one has since been charged with murder. Black Lives Matter (BLM) supporters gathered on May 26 to denounce the death and actions of the police officers. Clashes ensued between protesters and riot police; with demonstrators throwing bricks and projectiles at police and police property, and police responding with tear gas and rubber bullets as they attempted to disperse the crowds. Protests have since spread to a number of cities across the US, with solidarity protests taking place throughout the world.

Advice

Individuals in Australia are advised to monitor the situation, avoid all protests and demonstrations, anticipate a heightened security presence and transportation disruptions, and adhere to all instructions issued by the local authorities.
