US: Protesters clash with police in Brooklyn (New York City) June 3 /update 3

Demonstrators and security forces clashed in Brooklyn (New York City) as protests over police brutality continued on Wednesday night (local time), June 3. Several hundred protesters were marching towards Cadman Plaza when a standoff took place as police blocked their path. Scuffles broke out between a small group of protesters and police, resulting in one police officer being injured and several of the protesters being arrested. At least 90 people have so far reportedly been arrested in New York during protests on Wednesday night. Wednesday appears to have been a more restful evening than the night before, with at least 280 people being arrested on Tuesday, June 2.

Further protests and associated unrest are likely in the New York area in the near term.

Context

George Floyd died while being arrested by Minneapolis police officers on May 25. The four arresting police officers were subsequently fired, and one has since been charged with murder. Black Lives Matter (BLM) supporters gathered on May 26 to denounce the death and actions of the police officers. Clashes ensued between protesters and riot police; with demonstrators throwing bricks and projectiles at police and police property, and police responding with tear gas and rubber bullets as they attempted to disperse the crowds. Protests have since spread to a number of cities across the US.
