Flash floods in South Sulawesi province kill 15 overnight on July 13

At least 15 people have been killed in flash flooding which was triggered by heavy rains in South Sulawesi province overnight on Monday, July 13. According to media sources on Tuesday, July 14, heavy rain on Monday evening caused three rivers to overflow in the region. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency reported that over 4000 residents in six sub-districts in North Luwu regency were affected by flooding. An unknown number of people remain missing as main roads and access routes are still blocked by mud and other materials carried by floodwaters.
Further flooding and associated transportation disruptions are to be anticipated in the affected areas over the near term.

Those in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, anticipate lingering transportation and business disruptions, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters; 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult.
