Vietnam: Flooding and landslides kill five in Ha Giang province July 21

Five people were killed in landslides and flooding incidents caused by heavy rainfall in the northern province of Ha Giang on Tuesday, July 21. Two people were killed after their house collapsed in Hoang Su Phi district and another two were buried by a landslide in Ha Giang Town. Meanwhile, a child drowned in flooding in Bac Quang district. The incidents followed three days of heavy rainfall, with between 100 and 300 mm (4 and 12 in) of rainfall recorded each day. Overland transportation disruptions have been reported amid dangerous driving conditions. There have been reports of vehicles being swept away by the floodwaters. Other northern provinces, including Bac Giang, have received heavy rainfall and reported associated disruptions.

The National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF) has forecast further heavy rain in Ha Giang and other northern provinces over the coming days.

Individuals in the affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly affected by flooding, confirm road conditions, anticipate transportation and business disruptions, and adhere to instructions issued by local authorities. Avoid walking or driving through floodwaters.
