Security forces in the central city of Karak reportedly used tear gas to disperse protesters on Tuesday, August 4. Officials stated that protesters were throwing stones at security forces, injuring seven of them. Protesters gathered to demonstrate against the closure of the Teacher's Syndicate union's headquarters in the city, as well as the detention of several of its members at the end of July. Tuesday's incident marks the first time that protests over the issue have turned violent.

Further protests and a heightened security presence are to be expected in the near term.
