Indonesia: Workers to demonstrate nationwide August 14-16 /update 1

Event

Demonstrations have been scheduled in Jakarta on Friday, August 14, through Sunday, August 16. Participants will include the Alliance of the Workers' Movement with the People (GEBRAK), which consists of workers' organizations, farmers, students, and women. Reportedly, participants will gather at the National Parliament (DPR/MPR) building in Jakarta, although a time has not been specified. Organizers have stated that demonstrations are scheduled in 20 others provinces and cities across the country, with around 10,000 people expected to participate nationwide. 

Associated disruptions are to be expected in the vicinity of any protest site, along with a heightened security presence. 

Context

The omnibus bill on job creation has reportedly caused controversy due to its alleged potential impact on labor rights. Indonesia's president Joko Widodo initiated the bill to attract foreign investment, and thus create job opportunities in Indonesia. However, critics believe the bill will undermine job security, and reduce rights in other ways. Environmentalists have also warned of the potential negative impacts of additional companies establishing themselves in Indonesia.
