Militants kill three security forces in attack on checkpoint in Baramulla district (Jammu and Kashmir) on August 17; further security operations likely in near term

Warning

Event

Suspected militants killed two paramilitary police officers and a local constable in the Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday, August 17, in an attack on a checkpoint. The two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawans and a police officer were reportedly manning the checkpoint in the village of Kreeri when an unknown number of militants opened fire on the position at around 09:30 (local time). Search operations are reportedly ongoing in the area, with roadblocks being established around the district. The attack is the second to hit security forces in Jammu and Kashmir after two police officers were killed in the provincial capital Srinagar on August 14.

A heightened security presence and localized disruptions are likely in the Baramulla area in the near term and there remains a realistic possibility of further attacks and clashes.

Advice

Those in Jammu and Kashmir are advised to monitor developments, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities and their home governments.
