Indonesia: 6.9-magnitude earthquake strikes off the coast of Sumatra August 19

Event

The US Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 6.9-magnitude earthquake around 128 km (79.5 mi) west-southwest off Bengkulu (Sumatra) on Wednesday, August 19. The quake hit at around 05:23 (local time) at a depth of 10 km (6.2 mi). No tsunami warning was immediately issued.

Aftershocks are possible in the affected area over the coming hours and days.

Moderate to high-intensity earthquakes occur regularly within the country and the surrounding waters.
