Cape Verde: Tropical Storm Warning in effect due to passage of Tropical Storm Rene September 7-8

Tropical Storm Rene to pass over Cape Verde Islands on September 7-8; heavy rainfall and strong winds expected

Tropical Storm Rene formed in the North Atlantic Ocean late on Monday, September 7, and is forecast to pass through the islands into Tuesday morning, September 8. According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), as of 02:00 (local time) on Tuesday Rene was located over Boa Vista Island and will track westwards over the archipelago through the day. A tropical storm warning has been issued, with winds of up to 75 kph (45 mph) and 51 to 127 mm (2 to 5 in) of rainfall expected through Tuesday.

Heavy rainfall, strong winds and rough seas are expected across Cape Verde in the near term. Associated flooding, landslides, and disruptions to business and transport are possible, including flight disruptions at Amilcar Cabral International Airport (SID) on Sal Island.
