A suspected World War II (WWII) ordinance was inadvertently detonated on Sunday, September 20, killing two bomb disposal experts in a residential area of Honiara. The two killed were workers for an NGO which maps out World War II explosives and were in the capital clearing sites of bombs ahead of the 2023 Pacific Games. Police have cordoned off the affected area until other disposal experts and investigators have rendered the scene safe. No other casualties or damages were reported.
A heightened security presence and lingering traffic disruptions are to be expected in the affected area over the coming hours.
