Mozambique: Truck drivers protest at Mwanza border crossing November 11
Mwanza border crossing between Malawi and Mozambique closed due to protests by truck drivers on November 11; further disruptions at the border possible over the near term
Event
The Mwanza border crossing between Malawi and Mozambique closed on Wednesday, November 11, due to a protest by truck drivers. The unrest was linked to a dispute over border-crossing regulations and passport renewal fees, with drivers reportedly displeased with the outcome the day before of negotiations between the government and their representatives. The demonstration on the Malawian side of the border led to the customs and police offices being closed and vehicles therefore being unable to cross the border. It is not clear if the border was reopened on Wednesday.
Further protests and associated border closures are possible in the near term.
Advice
Those planning on using the border crossing are advised to monitor the situation, consider alternative routes in case of border closures, and adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
