Indonesia: Activists could gather outside Jakarta Metro Police, Dec. 12, in support of a cleric

Activists may rally at Jakarta Metro Police in Indonesia, Dec. 12, to show support for a cleric. Tight security almost certain.

Warning

Event

Supporters of Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) leader and cleric Rizieq Shihab may stage rallies outside Jakarta Metro Police (Polda Metro Jaya) from 0900 Dec. 12. Shihab is responding to a summons by the authorities who are investigating alleged coronavirus disease (COVID-19) health protocol violations during an earlier event. Thousands of activists have participated in past gatherings involving the FPI; lower numbers may turn up in any action Dec. 12, as the police announced they would forcibly disperse any gathering of Shihab's supporters.

Authorities will almost certainly increase security, including erecting roadblocks and security cordons, at Jakarta Metro Police and its surrounding area. Localized road closures and business disruptions may occur during any gathering. Groups that oppose FPI and Shihab may stage counterrallies at the site. Clashes between activists and security forces or between opposing groups of demonstrators are possible. Mass arrests may occur if security forces consider any activist to violate coronavirus disease (COVID-19) restrictions.

Context

Officials claim that health rule breaches occurred during a Nov. 14 event that Shihab organized at FPI's headquarters in Jakarta. FPI activists claim authorities are unfairly targeting Shihab while ignoring other instances of health control breaches in Indonesia, including during local election campaigns. Various civic groups have held demonstrations against FPI and Shihab, claiming that the FPI is not tolerant of other religions and does not adhere to COVID-19 health protocols.

Advice

Avoid Jakarta Metro Police and its surrounding areas Dec. 12 due to increased security measures and possible clashes. Plan for possible localized transport and business disruptions. If violence occurs nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter at a non-government building. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
