Philippines: Rallies likely to occur in multiple cities through December over arrest of activists
Civic groups likely to stage rallies in multiple cities in the Philippines through December to denounce detention of activists.
Event
Multiple civic groups will likely stage additional rallies in several cities through the end of December to demand that authorities release seven activists detained Dec. 10 over alleged illegal possession of firearms. The groups, which include the human rights organization Karapatan and the League of Filipino Students, claim that officials planted the evidence. Dozens to hundreds have protested outside Camp Crame, Camp Karingal, and the Quezon City Regional Trial Court in Metro Manila; similar numbers may participate in any upcoming action at the sites. Activists may also demonstrate outside Malacanang. Gatherings may also occur in other cities like Baguio, Cebu, Davao, and Zamboanga. Possible action venues include government buildings and other popular gathering sites like prominent intersections and public squares.
Authorities will almost certainly boost security, including setting up roadblocks and security cordons, around any protest sites. Localized transport and business disruptions may occur, particularly if the activists occupy nearby streets. Clashes are possible, especially if security personnel attempt to forcibly disperse the crowd. Mass arrests may occur if authorities consider any protester to violate coronavirus disease (COVID-19) restrictions.
Advice
Avoid any protest as a precaution. Plan for possible localized disruptions and use alternative routes to circumvent rally sites. If any violence erupts nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter in a non-governmental building. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
