A magnitude-6.1 earthquake occurred south of the coast of Mindanao Island, Philippines, at 0721 Dec. 16. The epicenter was about 22 km (13 miles) south of Sarangani and 105 km (65 miles) southeast of General Santos City. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 27 km (17 miles), and shaking was probably felt in Sarangani and Balut islands, as well as in southern Mindanao Island. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Aftershocks are likely over the coming hours and days. A tsunami warning has not been issued.

Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Minor disruptions could occur during shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly if no damage is found. Utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake's epicenter.
