A magnitude-5.1 earthquake occurred in the Savu Sea, north of Sumba island, East Nusa Tenggara Province, at around 1940 Dec. 25. The epicenter was around 73 km (45 miles) south-southeast of Komodo, East Nusa Tenggara Province. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 41 km (25 miles), and weak-to-light shaking may have occurred throughout western parts of East Nusa Tenggara, and eastern parts of East Nusa Tenggara provinces. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties because of the earthquake. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Light aftershocks are possible over the coming days. The incident did not prompt any tsunami advisories.
Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Minor disruptions could occur during shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly unless authorities discover damage. Utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake's epicenter.
