Solomon Islands: Magnitude-5.1 earthquake strikes off Santa Cruz Islands, Dec. 26

A magnitude-5.1 offshore earthquake occurred off the Santa Cruz Islands, Temotu Province, Solomon Islands at around 1849 Dec. 26. The epicenter was approximately 27 km (17 miles) east of Nendo Island. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 149 km (93 miles), and weak shaking may have occurred in the Santa Cruz Islands. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties, and significant damage is unlikely. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Aftershocks are possible over the coming days. The event did not prompt any tsunami advisories.
