Indonesia: Tightened security measures in place at South Jakarta District Court Jan. 4

Officials increasing security at South Jakarta District Court in Indonesia due to pretrial hearing of prominent Muslim cleric Jan. 4.

Warning

Event

Authorities are increasing security at South Jakarta District Court due to a pretrial hearing against the leader of the banned Islamic Defenders Front (FPI), Rizieq Shihab, from 0900 Jan. 4. Shihab is facing charges of violating coronavirus disease (COVID-19) health protocols during a Nov. 14, 2020 event at FPI's headquarters in Jakarta's Tanah Abang District. The police said they would deploy around 1,600 personnel.

Officials may erect roadblocks and barriers to facilitate security measures. Localized road closures and business disruptions are likely. Shihab's supporters may attempt to rally near the site, though the police have warned FPI members against any gathering; the government disbanded FPI Dec. 30, 2020 due to the group's alleged illegal activities that officials claimed have affected social order. Mass arrests and clashes between protesters and security forces are possible.

Advice

Avoid South Jakarta District Court and its surrounding areas due to increased security measures and possible clashes. Plan for localized transport and business disruptions. If violence occurs nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter at a non-governmental building. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
