Indonesia: Protests may occur at Kualanamu International Airport in Medan through March 6
Political party activists threaten to rally at Kualanamu International Airport in Medan, Indonesia, through March 6. Tight security likely.
Event
Supporters of the Democratic Party chairman Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono have threatened to gather at Kualanamu International Airport (KNO) in Medan, North Sumatra Province, as of March 5. The action is to prevent the arrival of party rival and presidential spokesperson Moeldoko at a party event, which is ongoing through March 6, in Deli Serdang Regency, amid infighting for party leadership. Moeldoko's planned time and date of arrival is unclear.
Agus Yudhoyono's supporters claim that the party event and Moeldoko's selection as new party chairman were unconstitutional. Hundreds of Agus Yudhoyono's supporters may participate in any action at KNO. Moeldoko's supporters may also stage counterrallies at the site.
Tight security is likely at the site through March 6 due to possible protests. While there have been no reported flight disruptions at KNO, such disruptions may occur if demonstrators occupy airport facilities. Localized ground transport disruptions are also possible if protesters blockade roads. Clashes between security personnel and demonstrators, or between rival groups of activists, may occur.
Context
Agus Yudhoyono is the son of former Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who was the leader of the Democratic Party. Several party members have opposed Agus Yudhoyono's appointment as a party chairman, claiming that he lacks experience and capability for the role. Agus Yudhoyono has also publicly called on President Joko Widodo to intervene and prevent Moeldoko from taking over power in the Democratic Party.
Advice
Confirm flights at KNO through March 6. Unless flying, consider avoiding KNO and its surrounding areas as a precaution. Seek updated information from trusted local contacts on rally plans, as organizers may not announce details in advance. Plan for possible localized ground transport disruptions. If clashes occur nearby, immediately depart the area. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
