Philippines: Officials implementing enhanced community quarantine restrictions in Metro Manila, some surrounding provinces, through April 4 /update 2
Philippines enacting enhanced community quarantine rules, 18:00-05:00 curfew in Metro Manila, some surrounding provinces through April 4.
Event
Philippine officials are imposing enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in Metro Manila and the surrounding provinces of Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, and Rizal, through April 4. Officials attributed the policy to concerns over a new COVID-19 variant; the controls are occurring during Holy Week taking place through April 4. Under ECQ, residents must stay at home, except to work in essential industries, obtain essential supplies, and for emergencies, among others. On-site work is suspended, except for essential services. Nonessential mass gatherings are banned. Public transport vehicles can still operate for commuters who are allowed to leave their homes. Authorities are enforcing an 18:00-05:00 nightly curfew, with exceptions for essential workers, among others. Some Metro Manila cities, including Manila and San Juan, have reissued or will reissue quarantine passes for residents to present to officials when in public. Nonessential travel to and from the region remains suspended through April 4.
Increased security measures are in place across Metro Manila and the surrounding provinces to impose the curbs. Officials have reportedly set up more than 1,100 checkpoints in and around Metro Manila to enforce the protocols. Restrictions will almost certainly prompt significant business and transport disruptions.
Advice
Strictly heed the instructions of authorities. Avoid all nonessential operations in areas impacted by restrictions. Confirm appointments. Remain cooperative if approached and questioned by law enforcement officers. Make allowances for likely business disruptions.
