Magnitude-6.0 offshore earthquake south of East Java Province, Indonesia, kills at least six, damages buildings April 10.

Critical

Event

A magnitude-6.0 offshore earthquake that struck south of East Java April 10 has killed at least six people and damaged some buildings. The epicenter of the earthquake, which occurred at about 14:17, was 147 km (91 miles) south of Surabaya. The tremor occurred at a depth of approximately 82 km (51 miles). Moderate shaking took place near the epicenter, while light-to-moderate shaking was felt across East Java Province, Bantul Regency, and parts of Central Java Province and Bali. Structural damage and casualties occurred in parts of the East Java regencies of Lumajang and Malang. Some of the deaths were caused by falling rocks. Although authorities say the earthquake will not cause a tsunami, officials have warned of potential landslides in hilly areas. Comprehensive damage assessments may be delayed in remote areas, and the official casualty count could rise. Aftershocks are likely over the coming days.

Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Minor disruptions could occur during shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly if no significant damage is found. Utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake's epicenter.

Advice

Plan accordingly for aftershocks. Out of an abundance of cautions, consider vacating multistory buildings if operating in affected areas until authorities confirm their structural integrity. Allow additional time for air and road travel, as aftershocks may prompt brief disruptions. Seek updated information on road conditions before driving in hilly areas in the affected region due to potential landslides.
