Event

Authorities have tightened security in Kainantu, Eastern Highlands Province, as of April 12, following tribal violence that killed at least 19 people in the area. Officials have attributed the fighting, which began around April 8, to a land ownership dispute between clans. Violence has also led to multiple damaged structures. While skirmishes reportedly halted April 10-11, authorities have warned that the fighting may resume in the coming days.

Officials will likely maintain security protocols, such as deploying additional personnel and checkpoints, in the coming days until the tensions subside. Businesses and government offices may close in the area. Authorities may suspend transportation services in the region, particularly if further clashes occur.

The impact area is around 56 km (35 miles) east-southeast of Goroka.

Advice

Confirm all transport arrangements and notify local police of arrival. Heed all security and transport instructions from local security personnel. Ensure businesses are open, and local security personnel are permitting ground travel, before departure. If further violence erupts, immediately leave the area or seek shelter in a secure location, such as a police station.
