A magnitude-5.4 earthquake occurred in the Indian Ocean, south of West Nusa Tenggara provinces, at around 10:42 WIB April 16. The epicenter was around 190 km (118 miles) south-southeast of Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara Province. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 23 km (14 miles), and light-to-moderate shaking was probably felt throughout Bali and West Nusa Tenggara province, as well as southwestern parts of East Nusa Tenggara Province. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Light aftershocks are possible over the coming days. The earthquake has not prompted any tsunami advisories.
Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Minor disruptions could occur during shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly if no damage is found. Utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake's epicenter.
