Indonesia: Activists plan bike procession in Jakarta April 17

Pro-democracy activists announce bike rally in Jakarta 16:00 April 17. Increased security, localized transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

The Milk Tea Alliance pro-democracy group plans to hold a bike rally in Jakarta April 17. Participants intend to demand a civilian government be restored in Myanmar and denounce the violence occurring in that country. Protesters will gather at Lot 8 in the Sudirman Central Business District (SCBD) at 16:00 before riding to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Secretariat. Activists will then proceed to the Myanmar Embassy. Organizers have not announced the procession route. Participants may hold a rally at the embassy. Participation in the procession is unclear, though dozens to a few hundred people may take part.

Security personnel will likely monitor the procession and may close roadways on and near the route. Localized transport disruptions are probable. Security forces may attempt to disperse the procession if it is especially disruptive. Clashes between police and protesters are possible, especially if authorities forcibly attempt to disperse demonstrators.

Advice

Avoid the procession due to possible violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near the procession. Monitor local media sources for updates on road conditions, as organizers may not announce the procession route in advance.
