Zimbabwe: Water shortages possible through mid-May due to ongoing dispute between service provider and authorities

Water shortages possible across Zimbabwe due to disputes between the service provider and several local authorities as of May 4.

Informational

Event

Water shortages are possible across several areas of Zimbabwe through mid-May due to ongoing financial disputes between the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) and several government departments and local authorities. Unconfirmed reports indicate that ZINWA has recently disconnected services in several areas, including Makuti, Magunje, Karoi, Mhangura, Mount Darwin, Murehwa, Mutoko, Maphisa, and areas near Gwanda, Juru, Rishinga, Hwange, Wedza Karoi, and Sadza. The service provision company also announced that further organizations or individuals who owe it money will have services suspended.

Business disruptions are possible in affected areas, especially at companies that rely heavily on water to maintain operations. Residential areas are also likely to experience shortages of drinking water. Health-related problems could also arise as a result of water shortages. Protests triggered by water shortages are possible. Security forces are likely to monitor all such incidents and could disperse demonstrators if they become disruptive.

Advice

Monitor local media for updates on the situation and related advisories from the authorities. Where possible, employ alternative water sources to offset municipal water usage, including groundwater, treated effluent water, and rainwater. Adhere to all water restrictions and adopt efficient water conservation behaviors without compromising normal hygienic practices. Avoid all demonstrations when possible. Consider using alternative routes to avoid protest sites due to the threat of violence and anticipated traffic congestion. Confirm route and destination security.
