Islamic State (IS) has reportedly claimed responsibility for the May 6 explosion in Male. The blast occurred outside the home of the former president and current Speaker of the People's Majlis Mohamed Nasheed on Neeloafaru Magu 20:30 May 6. The attack wounded Nasheed and at least four others and prompted the police and armed forces to increase their security alert level.

Tight security is likely to continue at the explosion site, nearby areas, and various government buildings in Male through at least May 7. Heightened security is also probable at tourist spots and resorts. Measures such as security cordons and vehicle checks may prompt localized road travel disruptions, as well as processing delays at the Velana International Airport (MLE).

Context

Although no major terror attacks have occurred in the Maldives, radicalization by Islamist extremist groups remains a concern. Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant and Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant – Khorasan Province are active militant groups in the country. Additionally, approximately 1 in 2000 Maldivians have reportedly served as foreign IS fighters in Syria. IS and its followers have claimed responsibility for at least three minor attacks in the Maldives in 2020. Authorities also regularly arrest suspected sympathizers and members of Islamist terror groups, though conviction rates remain low.
