Georgia: Opposition activists to demonstrate in central Tbilisi May 16
Opposition demonstration scheduled in 9 April Park, Tbilisi, Georgia, May 16; localized disruptions likely, counterprotests possible.
Event
Supporters of prominent businessman Levan Vasadze are planning to demonstrate in central Tbilisi May 16 to mark the launch of his "Unity, Essence, Hope" movement. Participants will gather at 9 April Park on Tabukashvili Street; the exact timing is unclear.
Additional police will almost certainly deploy around the gathering, which could prompt localized transport disruptions. Current COVID-19 measures in Georgia place strict restrictions on public gatherings; police could attempt to shut down any protest that is deemed to be breaching these restrictions. Some of Vasadze’s ultraconservative views are controversial and counterprotests are possible. While police will aim to keep rival protesters separate, low-level clashes are possible if opposing activists gather in proximity. While bystanders are unlikely to be targeted, they would face an indirect physical threat near any violence.
Advice
Avoid all protests as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed instructions from security forces and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Exercise caution and allow additional time for travel near 9 April Park on May 16.
